How do I contact GownTown?

You can email us at and our lovely people will answer your questions. No physical stores means better prices for you!

How do I place an order if the product is out of stock?

If the item is out of stock, unfortunately that means we’re too popular and some other person in your cohort has ordered the last one. We suggest you track them down and demand an explanation for the heinous crime.

If the item is out of stock, unfortunately you won’t be able to buy until we make more. In most cases, on the product page you can sign up to receive an email when we re-stock.

I changed my mind about my order/ordered the wrong product – can I change my order?

If you ordered after 10:30am on a weekday, you can contact us before 5pm and typically we can change the details of an order before it leaves the next day.
If you ordered before 10:30am or on a weekend, you can contact us to request a swap, however there will be a small fee to cover additional postage costs.


What methods of payment are available?

Credit card and PayPal are acceptable forms of payment on our website. Farm animals and your first-born child are not. (Credit card payments are securely processed by eWay). EFT payment is available for orders over $1,000 - contact us to request it.

How long will delivery take?

Delivery times vary by location. You can use our delivery time estimator at the top of this page (only available on desktop devices). Just enter your postcode for an estimate of both regular and express delivery times.

Like most companies, we do not dispatch orders on weekends or on public holidays. Weekend orders are processed first-thing Monday morning!

Why hasn’t my order arrived yet?

There are several reasons why your order might not have arrived in the time you expected:

  1. Pre-order item: if the product that you purchased was marked as 'pre-order', that means it is being made and normal delivery times to not apply until after manufacture is complete. Check the appropriate product page to remind yourself of the completion date.
  2. Australia Post delay: there are rare instances where AusPost experiences delays. This happens from time to time and unfortunately we can’t do anything about it except be mad about it, too.
  3. Item lost: this is an extremely rare occurrence with AusPost.

Do you deliver internationally?

Yes, international courier options are available in our checkout.


Do I have to hire my gown from the 'offical' provider?

If you are being forced to purchase from a particular organisation, this may consistitute anti-competitive behaviour. In such cases, you can find out more from or make a complaint to the Australian Competitition & Consumer Commission (ACCC). GownTown is comitted to ensuring that students always have fair options at graduation time, and we are more than happy to take up a potential case of anti-competitive behaviour on your behalf.

Are the gowns the right type/style/colour for my university?

Yes! We are committed to ensuring that every garment we sell complies with university specifications. You can check your university's published requirements to see that we conform for yourself!

Do you offer PhD garments?

Yes! We offer PhD garments at a growing number of universities. Navigate to the page for your university to check if we offer it at yours.

Returns and Refunds

Under what circumstances do we provide a return and refund?

We will provide a refund if your item(s) have a major fault or are incorrect. Refer to our Refunds and Returns Policy below. Please note that you must request a refund/return before attempting to post anything to us - items will not be received without a return authorisation code.


How do you sell graduation gowns for around the same, or even less than the cost of hiring?

We look after everything – from manufacture right through to delivery – so we don’t have to deal with costly dealers and middlemen. This means we can provide students with a top-quality product at an affordable price.

I’m a starving student! Can I get someone else (like my parents) to buy my gown for me as a gift?

Yes, we offer gift vouchers, so you can direct them to that! Go to the 'Shop Gifts' section in the menu.


What should I do with my garments once I receive them?

Because the gown is folded in order to ship it to you, we recommend putting it on a hanger for at least a day to allow any creases to fall out naturally. To be doubly sure that its crease-free and crisp, it is a good idea to give it the once-over with an iron on a low heat setting. The same applies for the hood.

What should I wear underneath my gown?

Each university advises students slightly differently on this point, and you should check their advice before deciding. Everyone has his or her own fashion sense and knows what works best for them, but in our experience, the following guide works well:

  1. Guys: dark suit pants, a sharp relatively neutral-coloured shirt, a bright tie (which matches or complements the hood colour), and no suit jacket.
  2. Girls: formal business dress or blouse, with colours and accessories matching or complementing the hood colour.

By purchasing your grad gear from GownTown instead of hiring, you can try out different combinations ahead of the big day to get the perfect look.


Can I try on the gown before I buy it?

Nope, sorry. To keep prices down for you, we don’t have a physical store. But our sizing guides always ensure the perfect fit when used correctly. We even provide a DIY head-measuring-tape that you can print out to get your hat size!

What if you don’t provide a hood for my university?

You can buy a gown and cap on its own for $85 and buy or hire the hood separately. You can also fill out our Product Request Form, or Expression of Interest form if there is one for that product. If enough people ask for the hood, we may consider including it our permanent line!
